India is home to delicious cuisine, one of the most colorful and unique film industries in the world, and some astounding places to visit, such as the Taj Mahal in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. It is one of the “new” Seven Wonders of the World, and there’s a reason why it’s one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world. I visited the Taj Mahal a few years ago, and was blown away by the architectural beauty.

A little history: The Taj Mahal was built by the Mughal emperor, Shan Jahan, as a way of honoring his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The construction involved thousands of architects and craftsmen. It began in 1632 and wasn’t completed until nearly twenty years later.

The rest of the history behind the Taj Mahal offers plenty of scandal. While there are rumors that are not necessarily based on an accurate account, it is said that the emperor ordered that the chief architect, Ustad Ahmad Lahauri, have his hands cut off after the completion of the project. As the legend goes, Shan Jahan didn’t want anyone to be able to build similar masterpieces.

When you’ve had enough time touring the historical side of this beautiful country, make sure to try some of the traditional Indian dishes. Curries, chapattis, dals, and samosas are just a few of the delicious treats to try when visiting this Southern Asian country. Definitely make sure to watch a few Bollywood films when you’re over there as well.
